How a Bicycle is Made…

A friend brought this outstanding film to my attention. Vimeo is a great source for short films on all sorts of subjects. How a Bicycle is Made, a British Council film, was made at the Raleigh factory just after the War. There is wonderful information here, including the forming of tubing, how the bottom bracket lug is made, enameling and lining etc.. By this time Raleigh had bought the Rudge brand so you will see bicycles branded Rudge in the factory. Note the picture of a Rover Safety Bicycle near the beginning of the film. Health and safety concerns are a bit minimal, with few workers wearing gloves or other protective clothing.

I could go miles and miles on one of these, Father!
